JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A 19-year-old Columbia man was arrested and charged after he allegedly threatened undercover police officers and had a half-pound of marijuana under the hood of his car Friday.
According to court documents, undercover Jefferson City officers encountered Yashim M. Smith and others during an investigation of a recent homicide. Smith and the others were suspected of carrying guns and being involved in drug activity, police said. The documents do not detail which homicide police were investigating or whether Smith and his companions are suspected in the homicide.
Smith allegedly confronted the officers and threatened them with what they believed to be a concealed handgun.
Officers stopped the vehicle Smith and his companions were in and smelled marijuana, according to documents. Officers found a half-pound of marijuana under the hood of the vehicle and another 14 grams of marijuana on Smith, documents say.
Jefferson City police said Smith was not being specifically being watched.
“Multiple members of the department including plain clothes officers have been saturating areas of the city,” said Lt. David Williams with JCPD. “The added saturation is a result of the two ongoing homicide investigations. The contact was based upon that directed enforcement.”
Smith was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon.
