Man gets probation for growing marijuana

SAC CITY, Iowa | A Schaller, Iowa, man was placed on probation Wednesday for growing marijuana in his home.

District Associate Judge Adria Kester suspended a five-year prison sentence and placed Keegan Cross on probation for three years. Cross, 35, pleaded guilty last month in Sac County District Court to possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Cross also must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment or counseling.

Cross and his mother, Glenda Turnquist, were arrested March 30 after Sac County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at a home in the 500 block of Perth Street and found 80 marijuana plants, growing lamps, watering pumps, potting soil and fertilizer. Cross was accused of using his grandfather’s credit card to buy supplies needed to grow the marijuana.

Turnquist, 58, of Schaller, is scheduled to stand trial in September on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, failure to affix a drug tax stamp and dependent adult abuse.
