A Penal resident who claimed he smoked marijuana to ease the pain from a gunshot injury to his head was fined $1,000 yesterday.

Daren Umraw, a labourer, pleaded guilty in San Fernando First Magistrates Court to a marijuana possession charge. He was arrested on Friday.

Prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said around 3.35 pm WPC Charles saw a road traffic accident along the SS Erin Road near Ramai Trace, Debe which had created a long line of traffic.

She observed that Umraw, one of the drivers involved in the accident, was fidgeting with something near his legs. She asked him to exit the car, searched him and found 1.4 grammes of marijuana in his right pants pocket. Umraw told Magistrate Alicia Chankar that in 2006 he enrolled in a rehabilitation programme and was doing good until Independence 2015.

“Two men came in my car one with a loaded firearm and one with a knife,” he said.

During the hold up the gun went off and the bullet “tip my skull,” he told the magistrate. The men escaped with his car.

Umraw said since then he has been experiencing pain, especially around full moon.

“This thing is feel like it want to explode,” he said. Umraw said he turned his life around but when the pain comes on he cannot eat or sleep. The magistrate gave him two weeks to pay the money or serve three months in jail.
