DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — A 21-year-old man was arrested after trying to speed away from cops because he had marijuana in his car.
According to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, on March 3 a deputy noticed a car driving with numerous cracks in the windshield. The deputy turned around to get behind the vehicle and the driver sped up in an attempt to flee the area. He turned onto another road going so quickly that the passenger side tires went into the grass, and the car sped up again.
The driver eventually pulled over. When the deputy approached the driver, he appeared “very nervous” as he gave him his driver’s license and the deputy could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. He also told the deputy he thought his license was suspended, but the license came back valid.
The deputy asked the man if there was any marijuana in the vehicle, and he said he “does not smoke marijuana.” The deputy then told him that if he had less than 20 grams, he would write him a Notice To Appear. The man then said he had more than 20 grams. He had 47 grams and it was all in his center console.
Another deputy re-traced the driver’s route and found 47.5 grams of weed in a blue baggie on the side of the road. Together with the weed found in the console, the total weight of the drugs was 54.4 grams.
The driver was arrested for possession of marijuana over 20 grams.
