Weed-burning starts blaze

weed house on fire

A shed caught fire outside a Grand Junction home Saturday after a property owner burning weeds lost control of the burn when high winds kicked up, according to the Grand Junction Fire Department.

The department responded to 2948 G Road at about 3:30 p.m Saturday to find the shed fully engulfed in flames, according to a press release from the department.

“Fire suppression operations were hampered by high winds and limited access to a water supply,” the release said.

Crews were able to get the fire under control and prevent flames from spreading to neighboring homes. Nobody was injured in the fire.

Mesa County is currently under Stage 1 restrictions, which includes a ban on any fire or campfire not in a permanently constructed fire grate in a developed park, campground, home or picnic area. Agricultural burns are only allowed with a permit issued by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
