Nevada hopes to bring in a lot of green with the sale of weed.
Starting Saturday July 1, 2017 at 12:01 a.m. Nevada followed the footsteps of four other states — Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and Alaska– to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana, according to MarketWatch. That means adults aged 21 and older will be able to purchase up to one ounce of marijuana, or one-eighth of an ounce in marijuana edibles and concentrates.
The sales, however, will be subjected to high taxes. With a 10 percent sales tax, state officials expect to bring in roughly $60 million in the first two years.
Adults will now be able to purchase marijuana similarly to how they purchase alcohol, from regulated businesses rather than criminals in the illegal market,” said Mason Tvert, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project, in a statement. “Tens of millions of visitors per year from all over the U.S. and around the world will see firsthand that regulating marijuana works.”
But the newly-minted law still prohibits certain sales and behavior. For example, users cannot consume weed in public, drive under the influence or buy anywhere but from a state-licensed store. Those provisions, however, didn’t stop thousands from lining up at dispensaries across Nevada early Saturday morning.
