Boynton Beach to allow medical marijuana dispensaries

Boynton Beach is taking the first steps toward allowing medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

The state Legislature gave cities the choice of either banning dispensaries, or allowing them with rules no more restrictive than those faced by corner drug stores.

Boynton commissioners on Tuesday gave the dispensaries initial approval in a 3-2 vote. Commissioners Christina Romelus and Mack McCray voted against them, citing concerns about being able to monitor and regulate them. Mayor Steven Grant, Vice Mayor Justin Katz and Commissioner Joe Casello favored them, saying it would benefit residents.

Boynton would approve the dispensaries with a final vote in November. The city joins Lake Worth and unincorporated areas of Palm Beach County in welcoming the dispensaries. Delray Beach last month outlawed them, and Boca Raton has yet to decide.
