Braddock council approved a proposal that would bring a medical marijuana facility to the community.
The property off 9th and Talbott streets used to be a housing development, but developers plan to build a 100,000-square-foot medical marijuana-growing operation.
Channel 11 spoke with two of the investors following tonight’s vote. Their reaction on 11 at 11.
Braddock Mayor John Fetterman said he believes the opportunity could transform the community and get Braddock out of financial distress.
A decline of the industry steel Industry is what brought us into Act 47, and the emergence of the brand-new industry, medical marijuana, could be the thing that bring us out of it,” Fetterman said.
Former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris is chairman of the developer, Laurel Green Medical, and said he has a vision of marijuana used in pain management.
My former colleagues in the sport of football have to deal with pain management, and also we know people who’ve been in car accidents, people who’ve been hurt on the job,” Harris said.
Backers said the operation would produce 20,000 pounds of marijuana and 3,000 pounds of cannabis oil annually. They said about 50-70 full-time jobs would be created, generating more than $1 million in tax revenue for the borough.
We believe we have a really strong application and it would again be a game changer in town if we had this facility,” Fetterman said.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has 90 days to decide on the application.
