A Southern California town has approved a 489,000-square-foot medical marijuana cultivation and production facility that would make it one of the largest in the U.S. marijuana industry.
The facility is to be built in Cathedral City, near Palm Springs, by Canada-based Sunniva Inc., which provides medical cannabis products and services.
The first phase of the facility will be 325,000 square feet and could produce up to 177,000 pounds of flower per year. Construction is expected to begin by the end of year, according to Business Insider.
The second-phase of construction will result in a 164,000-square-foot facility that will produce 100,000 pounds of medical cannabis per year. The operation is expected to create 185 full-time jobs, the news outlet reported.
Expect to see more of these mega-cultivation facilities as California’s new regulations are rolled out.
Proposed regulations at the state level allow for the largest cultivation operations in the U.S. industry, and the recreational rules – expected to be finalized in November – should carry that forward.
