California Fires Up Online Licensing for Marijuana Industry

California Fires Up Online Licensing for Marijuana Industry

California ended last week on a high note.

In preparation for rolling out the state’s newest industry on Jan. 1, marijuana entrepreneurs began rushing to complete their temporary business applications online. Made available Friday, California’s license application system is easy to access and navigate.

A mandatory requirement for conducting a legally complainant recreational marijuana business in the Golden State after Dec. 31, the temporary licenses can be obtained through the California Bureau of Cannabis Control Online Services.

Announced via Twitter, the online system allows California’s would-be marijuana retailers, cultivators, distributors, and testing facilities to get a head start on the application process.

The temporary licenses for California’s recreational marijuana industry will become effective Jan. 1, mandating any business first obtain a local business permit before applying for their temporary license. Per the emergency regulations governing California’s marijuana industry, the temporary licenses will be valid for 120 days.

Licensed as either a medicinal (M) or adult-use (A) facility, the designation will dictate when and where these marijuana businesses can legally operate. To be compliant, each licensee must have a $5,000 surety bond payable to the state of California. Additionally, licensees with an “A-license” and an “M-license” may operate from the same type of premises.

Per the state, only one licensee may occupy a single premises, with one exception. A licensee holding both an A-license and an M-license for the same commercial cannabis activity (retail sales) “may have the same premises for both types.”

After Jan. 1, recreational marijuana sales and deliveries in California will be allowed to occur between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

A temporary or annual license is currently available through the state, the choice is yours.

According to the Bureau of Cannabis Control, “the temporary license is generally a quicker process with fewer requirements and no application fee.” Created as a bridge to help legitimize local dispensaries, the temporary license enables marijuana businesses in good standing with their local municipality, “to continue doing business while the Bureau processes its annual license application.”
