From Cambridge to Broadway, Barrett Wilbert Weed’s path to ‘Mean Girls’

Almost 15 years since Tina Fey’s 2004 comedy exploded with the teenage set, “Mean Girls” is preparing to once again wear pink on Wednesdays — well, actually make that eight times a week. A Broadway musical adaptation of the eminently quotable high school satire opened Sunday at the August Wilson Theatre following a string of previews.

For Cambridge-born-and-bred actress Barrett Wilbert Weed — who stars as sharp-tongued Janis “Ian” Sarkisian, originally played on screen by Lizzy Caplan — “Mean Girls” marks the latest highlight in an accomplished career that’s seen the Elon grad originate the lead role of Veronica in “Heathers: The Musical” and take on parts in productions as diverse as “Lysistrata Jones” and the off-Broadway “bare the musical.”

Ahead of “Mean Girls” bowing on Broadway, Weed, 29, spoke by phone about the very fetch adaptation, her path to the limelight, and activism off-stage.
