Sticking to campaign promises, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced legislation on Thursday that would permit adults to posses 30 grams of marijuana in public–a feat that would pose Canada as the largest developed country to end a nationwide ban on recreational marijuana, according to the Associated Press.
The proposed legislation allows four plants to be grown at home. Those under 18 in possession of less than five wouldn’t face criminal charges, but those who sell it or give it to youth, could face up to 14 years in prison.
Canadian officials hope to have the proposed legislation set in stone by July 1, 2018. The federal government set the legal age at 18, though Canadian provinces have the authority to determine if it should be higher. Provinces will also decide how long the drug will be distributed and sold.
A tax on marijuana is expected to be announced at a later date.
