Canadian firm receives license for sizable marijuana grow in Colombia

Canadian company PharmaCielo Ltd. said it has been granted the first Colombian licenses to cultivate marijuana with unrestricted percentages of THC and CBD, creating a major opportunity for the company to grow and process medical cannabis.

Until now, the Colombian government allowed cultivation of only non-psychoactive cannabis with little to no THC, according to a news release.

Colombia legalized medical marijuana in 2015, and its MMJ industry is slowly coming together.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • PharmaCielo Colombia Holdings S.A.S. – a subsidiary of the Toronto-based parent company PharmaCielo Ltd. – has built a cultivation facility with 1.3 million square feet of greenhouse space since receiving a license to manufacture in 2016.
  • The Rionegro-based grower plans to supply plant seedlings to fill more than 2,500 acres of contract growers’ open-air greenhouses.
  • PharmaCielo Colombia announced a partnership earlier this year with Cooperativa Caucannabis. Comprised of 63 farmers, Cooperativa Caucannabis applied for its own cultivation license for a new greenhouse facility to be jointly operated with PharmaCielo Colombia.
