Ludhiana, July 15

While there has been a crackdown on drugs and addicts in the past few days, cannabis can be seen growing in different parts of the district, especially in the suburbs, which is providing an easy access to addicts.Addicts are often seen cutting the weed or just tearing away or plucking the leaves to use it as an intoxicant. As the cultivation of cannabis otherwise is illegal, its easy access to addicts is becoming a cause of concern among people of different localities and nearby areas, where the weed grows.“I see addicts in inebriated state cutting cannabis,” says Manpreet Singh, a resident of Sector-33, Chandigarh Road. “It is a serious matter because these people can cause harm or commit any crime, while they are intoxicated. I have seen a man rubbing the leaves and putting these in the mouth,” he said.As it is the monsoon season, the rain in the past few days has also spawned the growth of the weed, as the weather is conducive for the growth of plants. “The weed will only grow during the rainy season providing much more of this supply,” Gagan, another resident said.“Though we tried to get it cleared from a plot nearby, it is growing elsewhere, which must be removed by the municipal authorities,” he said. The weed must be totally removed to ensure that it doesn’t grow again, Nimrat another resident said. Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu was not available for comments.
