Chelsea Clinton denies untested claim about the hazard of marijuana use

Intake of Marijuana causes the occurrence of more deaths. But the link is not as focused as she suggested at first.

On Saturday a campaign occurred in which Chelsea Clinton was asked to share the opinion of her mother regarding the Drug Enforcement Administration’s recent decision not to assign marijuana to a different class or category.

In her response, Chelsea said that “absolutely supports more research” and has no issue in legalizing marijuana in states like Colorado or Oregon for recreational use. Later she turned to talk about the hazards of using cannabis.

“But we also have anecdotal evidence now from Colorado where some of the people who were taking marijuana for [medical] purposes, the coroner believes, after they had died, there were drug interactions with other things they were taking,” she said.

The National Institutes of Health has accepted that it’s difficult for someone to get overdosed on marijuana. Health risks such as blood thinning or benzodiazepines occurred while investigating the combination of marijuana with other drugs, ThinkProgress couldn’t find any evidence regarding the death of a medical marijuana used who are dying because of the combination of cannabis and other drugs they were taking.

A statement was sent to ThinkProgress in which the spokeswoman of Chelsea Clinton said that the comment was given by Clinton about marijuana use causing deaths was misinterpreted.

“While discussing her and her mother’s support for rescheduling marijuana to allow for further study of both its medical benefits and possible interactions with other medications, Chelsea misspoke about marijuana’s interaction with other drugs contributing to specific deaths,” the spokeswoman said.

According to the Forbes report, the recent studies support the idea of making marijuana legal for medical purposes as it saves many patients lives by reducing their consumption of more dangerous medications.

However, it’s not good to say that intoxication of marijuana does not cause deaths. A coroner has listed “marijuana intoxication” as a factor for recently wide deaths in Colorado. An autopsy report was found regarding the death of 21 years old that happened last, had strains of both THC and metabolite of cocaine in his system. But those deaths do not happen because of marijuana indication for medical reasons, those deaths occurred when a person is under the influence of marijuana and suffers from psychotic episodes or accidents.
Tom Angell was the first one to highlight the comments of Chelsea Clinton about marijuana in Ohio in a Marijuanna.com report. Angell argued that she should have gone further in hopes of getting votes from the youngster while she expressed her support for doing more to allow more research in marijuana than President Obama.

“It has been suggested that Clinton’s struggling outreach to millennial voters could be strengthened by endorsing marijuana legalization,” Angell writes. “Young people overwhelmingly support ending cannabis prohibition, and polls show that a sizable chunk is now supporting Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and the Green Party’s Jill Stein, both of whom have made marijuana law reform centerpieces of their campaigns.”

The Spokeswoman of Chelsea Clinton made it clear in her statement which was sent to ThinkProgress Hillary and her daughter both agrees on the supporting reform of restrictive federal marijuana regulations.

“Hillary Clinton has said we should allow states that have reformed their marijuana laws to act as laboratories for our democracy and we should reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule II substance,” she said. “Chelsea agrees and has long recognized and spoken about the need to study marijuana and get the conversation out of politics and into medicine and science where it belongs.”
