Authorities in Argentina have broken up an organization that took advantage of the merchandising boom generated by the World Cup to smuggle drugs in the country.
The organization trafficked marijuana and cocaine in fake World Cup trophies to avoid raising suspicions.
“These merchants of death have endless ingenuity, but don’t be fooled. They shouldn’t be admired. On the contrary… they are now in jail,” said security minister Cristian Ritondo, according to a statement.
Officials said 20kg of marijuana, 10kg of cocaine, 1,800 doses of crack-cocaine known as “paco” and 400,000 Argentine pesos ($21,450) were seized.
Four men and two women of the so-called ‘Narcos de la Copa’ organization (World Cup Traffickers gang) were arrested in the operation.
