Colorado marijuana products must come with warning labels starting Oct.

Colorado marijuana products will soon have labels aimed to keep the drug out of the hands of children.

Starting Saturday, the weed products must feature a diamond-shaped symbol with this statement on the packaging: “Contains Marijuana. Keep out of the reach of children.”

According to a news release Monday, the state’s Department of Public Health and Environment and Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcement Division have teamed up “to educate Coloradans about the rules, designed to promote public health and safety, raise awareness and help people more accurately identify marijuana products.”

The symbol for retail marijuana contains an exclamation point and the letters “THC,” or tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Medical marijuana products will have a similar symbol except that it includes the letter “M,” to stand for medical marijuana.

The weed packaging will also feature statements about standard serving size, level of potency and contaminant testings, while health and physical benefit claims cannot be included on labels.

The words “candy” or “candies” cannot appear on the packaging unless they’re part of the product’s name.

“With the new universal symbol, people can more easily identify marijuana products, monitor their intake by serving size and avoid eating too much,” Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer at the Department of Public Health and Environment, said in a statement. “And by making marijuana labels less appealing to children, we hope to keep them from accidentally eating THC and suffering the consequences.”

By Dec. 1, all stores and medical centers selling marijuana are required to identify their products with the symbols.
