MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) — Divers will be removing an invasive weed from Lake Winnisquam by hand this summer in the first comprehensive attempt to manage the milfoil in the central New Hampshire lake.
New Hampshire Public Radio reports that the newly created Winnisquam Watershed Network received $46,000 in state and local funding for the project in the state’s fourth largest lake.
Divers will be going into the lake until September to remove the plant. They’ll pull the milfoil out by its roots in shoreline areas and use suction hoses on some denser growth. They plan to use herbicide this fall.
Network president Lisa Eggleston says the group wants to try to prevent the invasive weed from spreading within the lake and from getting into other waterways.
