Effective Weed Management Program

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Hard-to-control weeds are problematic in orchards and vineyards, particularly those weeds that have developed glyphosate resistance. Industry experts agree the best way to control weeds is to use a combination of pre-and post-emergent herbicides, coupled with chemistry rotation. Alion® and Rely® 280 from Bayer are proven tools to maintain season-long weed control.

Pre- and post-emergent herbicides are the foundation of a strong integrated weed management program to effectively deter weed growth. A combination of Alion and Rely 280 delivers the best season-long control on challenging weeds surrounding grapes and citrus such as marestail and hairy fleabane.

Alion is a pre-emergent herbicide that offers a wide range of extended control of grasses, broadleaf, and glyphosate-resistant weeds for up to six months, without compromising plant or crop safety.

As a post-emergent contact herbicide, Rely 280 offers rapid control and a unique mode of action against resistant and problematic weeds, notably giant ragweed, waterhemp and Palmer amaranth.

“Some of the benefits of Alion are its unique properties and control of one the widest ranges of broadleaf weeds and grasses,” said Dustin Hauge, senior technical sales rep for Bayer. “It also has an extended period of control – up to six months – which gives you residual control into the spring and summer months. Rely 280 is used as a contact herbicide, and cleans up anything that pops up through the pre-emergence program.”

Small plot university trials conducted from 2014 to 2017, by Dr. Brad Hanson, associate Cooperative Extension specialist in the Department of Plant Sciences for the University of California, Davis, and Kurt Hembree, weed management farm advisor for the University of California Extension, showed that applications of Alion and Rely 280, when mixed with Roundup®, showed up to 100 percent control in jungle rice in almonds; up to 99 percent control of hairy fleabane in grapes; and up to 90 percent control of hairy fleabane vs. Italian ryegrass in almonds.

“Marestail and Fleabane are really hard to control and Alion is able to come in and control the weeds so we knock back the seed population so we don’t have any emergence from those weeds,” said Alex Del RioCalifornia pest control adviser. “With Rely 280, if you do have weeds, it has a really good knock down, burndown on those tough weeds, so we know we can rely on those products.”

Both Alion and Rely 280 provide a defense against glyphosate resistance, along with unsurpassed crop safety. Crops registered for both products include tree nuts, grapes, citrus and pome/stone fruits.
