Feds Stop Boat In Alamitos Bay, Capture 1,000 Pounds of Marijuana

Federal agents arrested two people in Long Beach and confiscated more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana from a boat in Alamitos Bay on Sunday, according to authorities.

Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife originally stopped the boat but quickly called in federal authorities after finding dozens of large black plastic bags aboard the vessel, said Lori Haley, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Fish and Wildlife officials who stopped the boat were on routine patrol and only homed in on it for a traffic violation, according to Fish and Wildlife Capt. Patrick Foy.

John McCaleb, who was at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, said he saw the boat motoring into the bay around 10 a.m. It looked older and was about 25 feet long, he said.

The boat was traveling on the left side of the entrance to the bay, instead of the right side as it was supposed to, when law enforcement approached, according to McCaleb.

Authorities towed the boat, and Homeland Security Investigations agents ultimately found 1,119 pounds of marijuana in 48 bags, according to Haley.

Agents arrested the two people aboard the vessel and a case has been presented to federal prosecutors, Haley said.
