Hey, bud, marijuana beer is here

All right, all right, all right: South Florida’s first marijuana-infused beers are coming to Devour Brewing Company in Boynton Beach.

The brewery’s Apricot Haze Berliner-Weisse and Florida Thunder IPA will be infused with cannabis terpenes oil, which gives cannabis its distinctive fragrance. But not to worry: These cannabis beers are all flavor, and will contain none of the psychoactive chemical compounds found in marijuana, such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

“If they did, I wouldn’t be talking to you over the phone right now. I’d be in jail,” Devour co-owner Chip Breighner says. “It’s superstrong, has a pungent flavor, and it smells and tastes just like the real thing.”

But it’s not the real thing, Breighner adds. Early test batches of Apricot Haze and Florida Thunder, which he released in mid-November, drew positive reactions and sold out “within days,” he says. The beers also drew questions.

“Like, some people were afraid and wondering if they drank it and took a drug test, they wouldn’t pass,” Breighner recalls with a laugh. “I’m like, ‘There’s no THC, guys. There’s no medical benefits.’ It’s just oil.”

Inspired by the August release of Supercritical, a cannabis-infused ale from the California-based Lagunitas Brewing Company, Breighner brewed Apricot Haze, a sour beer punched with apricot puree. Florida Thunder IPA, meanwhile, contains a cocktail of several cannabis oils, also without psychoactive ingredients.

Breighner says he’s waiting on another delivery of cannabis terpenes oil, and plans to offer fresh batches of Apricot Haze and Florida Thunder in the taproom starting in early February.
