There’s much more to the history of marijuana than we could fit in the animation. Did you know that master artists like Van Gogh and Rembrandt used canvas made from hemp?
The word canvas itself comes from the word cannabis.During World War II hemp was crucial for the creation of parachutes, ropes, and other military needs, so much so that the U.S. Government distributed 400,000 pounds of cannabis seeds to farmers.
The government would waive their requirement to serve in the military — along with their sons’ — in exchange for growing the crop. Farmers were required to watch the U.S. Department of Agriculture film “ U.S. Government distributed ” and read a cultivation booklet, and sign off to prove that they had done so.
