Holiday travelers advised to leave the weed behind

There’s a saying amongst frequent travelers, “Pack wisely”.

If you’re talking about cannabis products, even those purchased legally, it should be.

“Probably some edibles or vaping, something like that you could probably get past, but that’s as far as I’d push it,” commented one Las Vegas traveler.

Fact is, even though you can buy pot legally in Nevada, possessing it anywhere on airport property is against the law.

Christine Crews is in charge of Public Affairs at McCarran Airport. She points out back in February authorities installed so-called pot “amnesty boxes” throughout the airport and also at the rental car center.

“Each of those boxes, particularly here at McCarran is serviced multiple times a week. Every time they’re serviced there is something that has been surrendered in each box,” said Crews.

Some travelers believe it’s only the TSA you need to worry about.

“I don’t think you can bring anything across TSA, but I also don’t think they’d be paying attention to that. They’re more concerned with making sure we don’t have weapons or anything that’s going to hurt anybody,” said one traveler from Oklahoma.

There may be some truth there, but if someone at security finds any cannabis product, you will be handed over to local police.

To make things even more confusing, every airport has its own policies, whether in a legalized state or not. Unless your travel plans include spending time with law enforcement, airport authorities say, best to just leave the weed behind.
