More illegal marijuana grows seized in Yolo County

Yolo County sheriff’s deputies confiscated $778,000 in cannabis and arrested four people last week in its continued crackdown on unlawful marijuana grows.

Previously, the Sheriff’s Office seized about $14 million in marijuana that had been grown without a  required permit in multiple rural areas spanning from Dunnigan to the Capay Valley.

Sgt. Matt Davis said deputies served search warrants at the following locations last week:

* The 1000 block of County Road 88 in Dunnigan on Wednesday, resulting in the removal of 91 marijuana plants, five pounds of processed marijuana and property related to the sale of marijuana. The value of the marijuana was estimated at $273,000.

Gustavo Chavez, 39, of Dunnigan, was arrested on felony counts of cultivation of marijuana and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

* The 7000 block of Eucalyptus Road in Zamora on Thursday, with the seizure of 90 marijuana plants valued at $180,000 as well as six firearms.

Deputies arrested Youssef Houraira, 34, of Zamora, on felony counts of cultivation of marijuana, conspiracy, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

* The 3000 block of County Road 89 in Dunnigan on Friday, leading to the removal of 165 marijuana plans valued at $325,000 and two arrests.

Candida Ponce, 63, and Lorenzo Ponce, 67, both of Dunnigan, were arrested on felony counts of cultivation of marijuana and conspiracy. All four suspects were booked into the Yolo County Jail.

Davis said the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office continues to actively enforce the law related to the cultivation of marijuana.

While the cultivation of cannabis is permissible in the County of Yolo under certain circumstances, it requires a permit per County Code section 5-20.01,” Davis said in a news release. “Unlawful cultivation sites are being eradicated countywide as the locations of the grows become known.”

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying unlawful marijuana grows. Those who wish to remain anonymous are encouraged to call the tip line at 530-668-5248 with information related to that and any other criminal activity in Yolo County.
