Lawmaker moves to keep weed beer off Michigan store shelves

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Brewmasters in Colorado are set to roll out marijuana-infused beer this fall.

Now one Michigan lawmaker wants to make sure weed beer doesn’t find a place on store shelves in this state.

Sen. Rick Jones has introduced legislation prohibiting marijuana-infused beer in Michigan.

“Bar owners and bartenders have said that this would be a recipe for disaster,” said the senator in a news release.  “They have enough trouble judging intoxication levels now without adding the element of marijuana — especially when you consider that marijuana-infused foods can take an hour to kick in.”

The bill would ban the use, possession or sale of marijuana-infused alcohol in the state.

In Colorado, where recreational marijuana is legal, brewmasters are preparing to debut non-alcohol beer that would give buyers the intoxication without an alcohol headache.

The weed-spiked beer is considered an effort to establish a toehold in the marijuana industry.
