RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.March 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — There are few guarantees in farming, especially when it comes to weed control. But for the second year, Bayer is offering the Liberty® Weed Control Guarantee on the effective weed control of Liberty herbicide.

Heading into the 2018 season, growers who use Liberty can look forward to clean fields, thanks to the herbicide’s effective weed control and the guarantee. To qualify, growers must talk to their retailer about local requirements and S.T.O.P. Weeds with Liberty application guidelines.

“I have been using Liberty herbicide for two years,” said Mark Tuttle, a grower from Somonauk, Ill. “I’m always impressed by how Liberty controls some of the most challenging weeds like waterhemp and giant ragweed. But, every season is different, and weeds are always one of my greatest concerns. The Liberty Weed Control Guarantee helps make the decision to use Liberty each year easy. It’s a great added benefit.”

The active ingredient in Liberty is a Group 10 herbicide, which is the only nonselective herbicide that effectively controls grasses and broadleaf weeds, and has no known resistance in U.S. broadacre crops. In an independent research study conducted in 2017, growers ranked the LibertyLink system as the No. 1 rated soybean system, with the control of resistant weeds listed as a key reason for soybean seed decisions. Growers in this study were highly satisfied the overall performance of Liberty herbicide, especially on the spectrum of broadleaf weeds.

David Tanner, Liberty product manager, said the Liberty Weed Control Guarantee is just one more reason why Liberty is the simply better solution.

Tanner notes that the requirements for Liberty Weed Control Guarantee follow weed and herbicide use best management practices. This includes using locally approved residual herbicides at labeled rate and following local S.T.O.P Weeds with Liberty application guidelines:

  • Start clean and stay clean: Control weeds prior to planting with a burndown herbicide to start with a clean field. Stay clean by controlling escapes throughout the season.
  • Target weeds at less than three inches tall: Small weeds are easier to control. Liberty is a contact herbicide and should be applied on less than three-inch weeds that are emerged at time of spraying. Liberty does not offer residual control and therefore will not control weeds that have not emerged.
  • Optimize coverage: Growers should use appropriate rates, a minimum of 15 gallons of water and medium to coarse droplet size. Local Bayer representatives can provide requirements.
  • Pair with residuals: Growers must apply labeled rates of pre-residual herbicide with two effective modes of action. Local Bayer representatives can provide local requirements.

“Local Bayer representatives or retailers can help growers learn more about the requirements in their area and provide specific recommendations to help them with the weeds they struggle with the most,” Tanner said. “Control of resistant weeds is getting tougher by the year. Growers need a tool that is effective on weeds to protect their bottom line.”

Liberty is a low-risk, nonvolatile chemistry, when label instructions are followed and it is applied under certain conditions, which provides peace of mind to growers, designed specifically for all LibertyLink® crops, including corn, cotton, soybean and InVigor® canola. Growers continue to see the value of the LibertyLink system. In 2017, LibertyLink had a record year with almost 5 million new acres of LibertyLink soybeans planted across the country. For more information about Liberty, including the Liberty Weed Control Guarantee, visit www.cropscience.bayer.us/products/herbicides/liberty.
