A local company says it has made the biggest marijuana sale in BC history.
Delta-based Zenabis has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the province of New Brunswick to supply all its recreational pot, once it’s legalized, calling it the largest deal of its kind in Canada and a first for BC.
“This is a huge deal. We were approached by the province of New Brunswick to supply them with cannabis in order to be prepared for the recreational market,” says Zenabis Business and Communications Manager May Nazair.
“What this means is approximately $40 to 50 million in revenue and we are looking at four million grams of cannabis annually,” she tells NEWS 1130.
The agreement is also expected to create about 450 jobs in the village of Atholville, New Brunswick as well as economic spin-offs for the Lower Mainland, including up to 60 jobs at Zenabis’ headquarters in Delta.
“It’s a great deal for the local economies in both British Columbia and New Brunswick. We are working hard to get another facility ready in Stellarton Nova Scotia as well, which will be our third facility,” adds Nazair.
“The primary growth of the marijuana product will be in Altholville but a lot of the processing will happen in Delta on Annacis Island and a lot of the distribution of the product will be coming out of Delta as well.”
Nazair says as Zenabis opens more sites the company is positioning itself to be the largest “coast-to-coast” licensed cannabis producer in the country.
The federal government is on track to legalize recreational marijuana across the country by July. BC has yet to announce how it will deal with the sale of pot and enforcement of new laws.
The New Brunswick government announced in March it has made weed part of its economic strategy, and plans to “build a ‘best-in-class’ hub of infrastructure and research clusters to attract new investment’” in marijuana. It is giving producers financial incentives and developed a community college program for cannabis technicians.
