Local governments moving slowly on marijuana

UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — What many thought would be a race to establish Medical Marijuana businesses in Michigan has turned into a crawl, especially in West Michigan because local municipalities have been taking their time enacting local ordinances.

It’s been two months since the state began accepting license applications, but they can’t be completed until local fees are paid, properties secured and other requirements met.

Kalamazoo Township will hold a first reading on ordinance amendments tonight. Battle Creek will begin circulating their application form today, but won’t begin accepting them for another week.

Portage doesn’t plan a first reading on its ordinance until the 27th and final approval will come sometime after that. Kalamazoo City Commissioners also are taking their time.
