MAN ACCUSED IN TWO ROBBERIES FOUND WITH MARIJUANA IN JAIL CELL

Add another charge against an Iowa City man already accused in two robberies.

Police on Tuesday officially charged 22-year-old Cedric Johnson of South Van Buren Street with Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Facility. According to an arrest report, when police were booking Johnson into the jail on Aug. 4 they did not find anything on him.

But while he was in the holding cell, a deputy reported seeing him trying to get rid of something which the deputy believed to be drugs. After Johnson was removed from the cell, the deputy found what was left of a foil wrapper and a substance appearing to be marijuana.

The arresting officer was then called back and also stated it appeared to be marijuana. The substance was sent for testing, which has now confirmed it to be the drug.

Johnson had initially been arrested for causing a melee at Falbo’s Pizza on May 21, during which he allegedly tried to grab some loose cash from another person’s pocket before punching out the man. He was arrested after returning to Falbo’s at a later date to apply for a job.

He was charged earlier this month in a second, similar robbery at the Kum and Go on Burlington and Gilbert streets on July 3. Police say he again grabbed loose bills from another person, then knocked that person off-balance so he could get away.

On top of the new drug-related charge, Johnson is charged with two counts of 2nd Degree Robbery. In total, he faces up to 25 years in prison, if convicted on all three charges.
