Man arrested for smoking weed in front of Sheriff’s Department

A man was arrested Monday morning in Parker, Arizona after deputies discovered him allegedly smoking marijuana directly in front of the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department.

Lieutenant Richard Epps said he was sitting in his office when he heard a radio call for assistance in the front parking lot of the building, with a man being taken into custody.

It turned out that a Sheriff’s administrator had been coming into the building when she smelled marijuana smoke and asked a deputy to check it out.

“The guy was sitting in the car because he’d driven his brother to come in and make a registration,” Epps told Parker Live. “So while his brother was in our office, he was waiting in the car outside.”

Sheriff’s K-9 Sergeant Josh Banuelos went out to make contact with the man, and discovered him allegedly smoking marijuana. The man was arrested.

“The thing is, regardless of whether the law eventually changes on marijuana or not, it’s illegal in Arizona right now,” Sheriff’s Captain Curt Bagby said. “And driving under the influence is not legal either.”

Epps said it was amazing that the man was doing it right in front of a law enforcement agency.

Bagby said he wanted to remind people that everyone is to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
