T. ALBANS, Vt. — Vermont police have arrested a man who acknowledged growing marijuana to prepare for possible statewide legalization of the drug.
St. Albans police say they came across Michael Marshall while investigating a hunting violation. Marshall fled into a house after a confrontation with police, and then consented to a search of the residence. Police say they then found and seized 13 full-grown marijuana plants and 27 smaller plants.
Police say Marshall told them he thought marijuana would be legalized soon, so he wanted to get an early start on growing it for future sale.
The possession of small amounts of marijuana has been decriminalized in the state of Vermont, but it is still illegal for recreational use.
Police issued Marshall a citation to appear in court next month.
SACRAMENTO — Sacramento County Coroner’s deputies have identified one of the young adults killed in a shooting on Sunday outside a suspected marijuana growing house in south Sacramento.
The first of the two people identified in the 4 a.m. Sunday shooting is Glen Myers, 18, of Sacramento. A memorial to the second person shot and killed has grown near the shooting scene, but the Coroner’s Department has not released the person’s name.
Police have arrested Sean Huang, 46, of Sacramento on suspicion of murder in their deaths. Homicide investigators said they believe he acted alone.
Huang was arrested at a hospital where he had gone for treatment of an injury that police believe was suffered at the crime scene. Huang had been identified early on as a person of interest in the events that unfolded in the 5900 block of 68th Street near Lemon Hill Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found the two bodies lying in the road. A police spokeswoman said violent crimes associated with marijuana growing operations have been on the rise.
LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. — Two men have been sentenced for their roles in a plot to deliver marijuana to Rutgers University.
NJ.com reports that 32-year-old Jason Ho, of New York City, was sentenced to up to 23 months in prison Monday. Co-defendant 23-year-old Nirup Reddy, of Flemington, New Jersey, was sentenced to five years’ probation. Both were charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and conspiracy.
Police say Ho and Reddy were paid to transport 80 pounds of high grade marijuana from South Whitehall Township to Rutgers. Authorities say both men were stopped a short time after picking up the shipment and arrested on Aug. 12.
Prosecutors say Reddy cooperated with their investigation while Ho was uncooperative.
NEWARK, N.J. — About a dozen people in New Jersey have become ill after police say they apparently ingested the synthetic marijuana K2.
Police in Newark responded Thursday night to a report of a sick person foaming at the mouth in the city. When they arrived at the scene, they say they found about 12 people experiencing similar symptoms.
They were taken to area hospitals. No fatalities have been reported.
Police say they’re investigating the source and working to identify the distributor of the synthetic marijuana.
