A shipment containing hidden marijuana was discovered on the US-Mexico border. It was disguised to look like fresh watermelons.
The marijuana is said to be worth more than $800,000.
According to Port director Efrain Solis Jr, smugglers of illegal narcotics have been working on more creative ways to bring drugs into the U.S.
According to an agency statement, 1360 kilograms of the alleged drug was discovered by the US Customs and Border Protection at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility. The substance was in a commercial shipment of fresh watermelons.
“Our frontline CBP officers’ experience, vigilance and attention to detail prevents the introduction of these dangerous drugs into our country,” Efrain Solis Jr. said.
The drugs were found when officers and a canine team conducted a second inspection on a tractor trailer on January 17.
Homeland Security are investigating and the drugs are valued at approximately US$600,092.
