Maumee City Council voted 5-1 Monday night to approve the creation of a new chapter in the city’s codified ordinances establishing regulations for medical marijuana facilities.
Licenses will cost $10,000 per year and expire after two years. There is also a $5,000 application fee. Facilities must be 500 feet from property carrying “prohibited” designations, such as schools.
Council approved a zoning amendment 5-1 a month ago to allow for the cultivation of medical marijuana in certain areas. Growers with a permit are able to grow pot in M-1, light industrial, and C-2, general commercial zoning designations.
Ohio cities are debating how they’ll deal with medical marijuana, and many are waiting for guidance from the state on how to form legislation. Licenses are expected to be issued before the end of the year. The Ohio Department of Commerce plans to issue 24 of them; half to smaller operations, and half to larger ones.
Rossford and Sylvania are considering approval for cultivation, while Oregon passed a moratorium in July.
In Toledo, an investment group has applied for a special use permit to open a medicinal marijuana facility on Sylvania Avenue.
