Mequon banker caught growing marijuana in his riverfront garden

It was a rare sight in Mequon — a drug bust in a rustic neighborhood.

Police went to the neighborhood after getting a tip that one of the residents had taken his gardening to an illegal level.

That tipster was a Department of Natural Resources agent, who was kayaking along the Milwaukee river in front of a home and spotted a garden growing 6-foot marijuana plants.

Police shared photos from the raid, where they seized 18 plants in the garden and marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the house. They arrested owner Gregory Dorf.

Dorf wasn’t at the home Friday afternoon and didn’t respond to WISN 12 News’ call for comment.

According to his LinkedIn page, Dorf was an executive at Town Bank. The bank said he no longer works there.

Prosecutors said there was no evidence Dorf was selling the weed he grew. He told them he used it instead of prescription opiates to treat his health problems, and figured it was safer to grow it himself than to buy from dangerous drug dealers.

A judge sentenced Dorf to two years of probation and ordered him to use no drugs without a prescription.
