Missouri’s Megan Ellyia Green, a St. Louis Alderwoman from the 15th Ward, filed a bill on Wednesday that could dramatically alter the city’s current marijuana law.
Green’s proposed legislation would prohibit the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) from pursuing “civil or criminal” penalties for adults (21 and over) caught with more than 2 ounces of marijuana or found cultivating more than ten plants.
A municipal effort at adult-use legalization, if passed, Green’s bill would allow St. Louis residents to consume, vend, and cultivate personal amounts of marijuana – while handcuffing the SLMPD from unwarranted prosecutions.
Employment Protection
“It shall be unlawful employment practice for an employer to refuse to hire any potential employee or terminate the employment of any employee due to that person engaging in any activity that is subject of this Ordinance.”
In other words, Green’s legislation would make it illegal for employers to refuse to hire or fire someone for legally consuming marijuana in their free time.
A spokesman for St. Louis’ mayor told the Post-Dispatch, “the mayor was in favor of decriminalizing marijuana use,” while issuing a noteworthy caveat. “It’s very difficult for a city to go alone on this type of issue.”
