Nevada Gaming Commission to discuss marijuana and casinos

Nevada Gaming Commission to discuss marijuana and casinos

The Nevada Gaming Commission hopes to address during an upcoming special meeting the problems the industry may face from the state’s recent legalization of recreational marijuana.

The commission will meet Thursday to discuss ways to keep the state’s gaming companies disassociated from something that is federally illegal, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Even though Nevada has legalized recreational marijuana, the use and sales of cannabis is still a violation of federal law.

State gaming laws and regulations specifically prohibit behavior by gaming licensees that would discredit the industry. Nevada’s gaming regulators say violating a federal law could do exactly that.

Members of the commission also worry the federal government may take a stronger interest in Nevada’s gaming industry if the state appears unconcerned about marijuana use.

Earlier this month, the gaming industry appealed to the U.S. Treasury Department for clarity on how casinos should handle money generated by the marijuana sector.

The legalization of recreational marijuana has created other issues for casinos in Nevada, particularly that gaming facilities and their hotels not allow marijuana consumption.
