The NFL’s chief medical said he thinks that the league and the NFL Players Association should be undertaking the “really important” task of researching whether or not marijuana can be used to manage player pain, reports The Washington Post.
“Certainly the research about marijuana and really more particularly cannabinoid compounds as they may relate to the treatment of both acute and chronic pain, that is an area of research that we need a lot more information on and we need to further develop,” said Allen Sills in an interview with the Post. Sills, a Vanderbilt University neurosurgeon, was hired by the league in March.
Research on the matter may be closer at hand than it appears. In July, the NFL sent a letter to the players association offering to collaborate on research into the potential use of weed for pain management. The players association had been conducting its own research into the matter.
