Patriots’ Duron Harmon, former Rutgers standout, reportedly caught bringing marijuana into Costa Rica

Patriots' Duron Harmon, former Rutgers standout, reportedly caught bringing marijuana into Costa Rica

Former Rutgers defensive back Duron Harmon reportedly had an international incident.

The current New England Patriots safety was caught after attempting to bring marijuana into Costa Rica, according to La Nacion and The Costa Rica Star.

La Nacion reports Harmon was arrested, while The Costa Rica Star only reports he was “briefly detained.” Both outlets report Harmon was expelled from the country and sent back to the United States after authorities conducting a routine luggage screening and found, according to both outlets, “58 grams of marijuana inside a can of iced tea” as well as “three pipes with cannabis oil, a THC candy and four glass containers with compressed marijuana that weighed 4.3 grams.”

Both outlets reported Harmon flew to the Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. Harmon was then returned to Fort Lauderdale, according to the reports.

Early frontrunner for Rutgers’ starting QB job?

The Patriots told The Boston Globe in a prepared statement that “we are aware of the situation involving Duron Harmon Friday night in Costa Rica. He has since returned to the U.S. and we are seeking to gain more information. At this time, we have no further update.”

Harmon, who had four interceptions this past season for the AFC champion Patriots, will be subject to the league’s personal conduct policy due to the incident. Harmon could be fined or suspended by the league, regardless of whether he was arrested or the eventual legal outcome of the situation. Illegal possession of drugs is one of the prohibited activities the policy covers. Harmon could also be forced into the NFL’s substance abuse intervention program due to the incident.
