A record high 45 percent in the U.S. say they have tried marijuana.
According to a Gallup poll conducted between July 5-9, 2017, a record high 45% of respondents say they have tried marijuana and a record-tying 55% say they have not tried marijuana.
Gallup asked respondents the following question:
“Keeping in mind that all of your answers in this survey are confidential, have you, yourself ever happened to try marijuana?”
The 55% who said they have not tried marijuana ties a Gallup survey from 2015, when 55 percent of respondents said they had not tried marijuana.
The previous record for the percentage who said they had tried marijuana also came in 2015, when 44 percent of respondents said they had. One percent said they had no opinion in 2015.
“The rise in use over the past five decades has paralleled the increasing support for legalization – last year, 60% said pot should be legal, a record high,” says Gallup. “Eight states allow recreational marijuana use, and these states comprise one-fifth of the U.S. population.”
“A separate question finds 12% of Americans saying they currently smoke marijuana, far less than those who say they have tried the drug,” notes Gallup. “The percentage saying they smoke marijuana has nearly doubled since Gallup first asked this question in 2013, although there has been no meaningful increase over the past three years.”
When Gallup first asked respondents whether they currently smoke marijuana back in 2013, only seven percent (7%) of respondents said that they do. 93 percent said they do not in 2013.
13 percent of men, compared with only 7 percent of women say they use marijuana.
18 percent of 18-29-year-olds, and 10 percent of those aged 30-49 say they use marijuana. Meanwhile, of those aged 50-65+, only 11 percent say they use marijuana.
13 percent of those with household incomes of less than $30,000 per year say they use marijuana, while fewer (10%) of those with household incomes of $30,000-$74,999 say they use marijuana and even fewer (9%) of those with household incomes of $75,000+ say they use marijuana.
