RICHMOND, Maine— A public hearing will take place this week as the Richmond Planning Board officials discuss a proposed temporary ban on social clubs and marijuana retailers in the town.
According to a report by The Kennebec Journal, a vote on the moratorium and other items will be organized by the Board of Selectmen on January 18.
Maine cities and towns have been taking a cautious approach to the new state law that allows the usage of pot and Richmond is no different.
On November 8, Maine was among the states that legalized the possession and usage of recreational marijuana. Voters also approved the drug in Nevada, Massachusetts and California. Medical cannabis also received a nod by voters from North Dakota, Arkansas and Florida. As it stands, 21 per cent of the United States residents can legally access either medical or recreational marijuana with ease.
Last week, the secretary of state’s office signed off on the results after Maine voters approved the referendum in November. However, the rule-making process governing the legal sale and cultivation of cannabis could take the state several months to complete.
Richmond voters had narrowly favored the ballot initiative.
