Skunk-like smell leads police to marijuana grow right across the street

Detroit police didn’t have to go far to make their latest pot bust, which nabbed nearly 50 plants and over $125,000 in marijuana, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Police could smell it, even if they didn’t suspect its operation, which is estimated to have lasted six months or more before police obtained a search warrant and entered Monday.

The operation was located in a concrete building across the street from the 11th Precinct headquarters at 5100 Nevada on the city’s east side. There is also a closed liquor store at the address.

“Right across the street from the 11th Precinct, people thought they could harvest marijuana,” the chief said. “Once they got in, they found 12,472 grams (about 450 ounces) with a street value of $127,420.
