State: ‘fake weed’ linked to severe bleeding case in Wisconsin

State 'fake weed' linked to severe bleeding case in Wisconsin

WISCONSIN (WBAY) – Wisconsin health officials say there’s been a confirmed case of severe bleeding related to the use of synthetic cannabinoids in the state.

The Department of Health Services says the so-called “fake weed” is unsafe and health effects from using these products can be life-threatening.

DHS says there are two confirmed deaths in Illinois among users of the substance.

“These recent cases of severe bleeding are evidence of the risks associated with synthetic cannabinoids and the harm these products can cause,” said State Health Officer Karen McKeown. “We are working with state and local partners to make people aware of these dangers and identify potential cases in Wisconsin.”

Synthetic cannabinoids also go by the name of “K2” or “spice”. They’re sold in convenience stores, gas stations, and head shops.

Sometimes they are sold as liquids to be used with vaping devices.

Wisconsin law bans the sale of synthetic cannabinoids. In January, the Wisconsin Department of Justice announced a settlement against Capitol Petroleum for selling synthetic cannabinoids in Madison.

State Attorney General Brad Schimel also warned other gas stations about selling the substance.

The DOJ says fake weed is often mislabled as “herbal incense” or “potpourri” and that manufacturers are often changing the chemical formula to get around controlled substance laws.
