LANSING, MI – Michiganders looking to register as medical marijuana patients should do so directly through the state and not rely on third parties, according to the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
The state Michigan Medical Marihuana Program officially registers patients, giving them legal protection in Michigan. To avoid arrest, a medical marijuana patient must have a valid registration card and a valid state ID.
“Applicants often receive inaccurate information from third parties that result in their applications being delayed or denied,” wrote the department in a press release.
“Third-party business operations which tell patients that their application and physician certification serve as a temporary registration card are putting the patients at risk of possible arrest.”
The department’s Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation recommends applicants wait until they have a registry card before using medical marijuana.
The bureau also recommends against allowing any third party to submit a patient’s application, as the paperwork involved increases the possibility of fraudulent submissions.
Michiganders approved medical marijuana use via a ballot measure in 2008. To become a patient, one must submit an application along with other materials like a certification from a physician.
