If you’re lighting up on 4/20, you’re far from alone.
Support for legalizing marijuana in the U.S. has hit an all-time high, according to a new CBS poll. Nationwide, 61 percent want to legalize recreational cannabis, a five-point increase from 2016 and the highest mark ever reached in this poll. Medical marijuana has even more support with 88 percent.
CBS has tracked marijuana’s popularity for years, and it has increased every year since 2013. Back in 1979, only 27 percent supported legalization.
Highlights from the poll:
- Those over 65 are the only age group where the majority opposes legalization
- Among 18-34-year-olds, 75 percent support legalization
- Most Democrats and independent voters support legalizations, while Republicans are divided
- More than half of U.S. adults have tried marijuana
- Only 23 percent of Americans think marijuana increases violent crime, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions asserts
- A majority of voters in all parties agree the federal government shouldn’t override state laws allowing marijuana
