Tom Garrett, a freshman Republican Representative from Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, believes marijuana use should be a matter of personal choice.
On Tuesday, Garrett expressed that welcome opinion on the president’s favorite social media platform.
Garrett’s word is his bond
“Justice that isn’t blind isn’t justice,” explained Rep. Garrett. The Virginia Republican then stated that when he heads over to NORML, “I’ll blow their minds when I tell them I’m not pro-marijuana, I’m pro-justice; I’m pro-medical choice; I’m pro-freedom; I’m pro-appropriate level of government having domain over particular issues.” Rep. Garrett then summarized his three main arguments against marijuana prohibition: marijuana laws are not equally applied, and that lack of equal application leads to inherent injustice, which in turn leads to a diminished respect for the rule of law.
A proponent of federalism and the 10th amendment, Representative Garrett introduced legislation earlier this year that would completely eradicate marijuana from the CSA.
Otherwise known as the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2017, the legislation would eliminate marijuana from the list of federally controlled substances while still prohibiting its sale across state lines.
Widely supported by Democrats, marijuana legalization is not just a Democratic issue. Of the 29 states that have reformed their marijuana laws, 10 of them voted for Donald Trump during the 2016 election.
