A person using a propane torch to burn weeds in Sunday in Centralia started a fire that did approximately $10,000 damage to a house, according to the Riverside Fire Authority.
The fire was reported at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday in the 400 block of Downing Road. Firefighters responded to find smoldering debris from the weed burner got underneath the residence, starting a fire.
Crews arrived and found smoke coming from under the residence and through the attic vents.
“Crews were able to gain access to the fire which had spread into the wall and floor joists, preventing it from extending into the rest of the residence,” according to a news release from the RFA.
The Chehalis Fire Department also responded. Downing Road and state Route 507 at the location were closed for about an hour. The fire was determined to be accidental. The residents were not displaced.
