More medical professionals are looking to cannabis as an alternative to harsh cancer treatments, because the success stories only continue to grow, which director Abby Epstein reveals in her documentary Weed the People. Rather than focusing on the plant alone, the film destigmatizes this powerful medicine with stories of healing and hope from five different families. Cannabis has been off-limits to doctors and researchers in the US, but it was a widely accepted remedy up until the early 20th century, when the plant was labeled as dangerous. The federal government still labels cannabis as such, so these families obtain CBD oil from underground sources to save their children from cancer.
Civilized was proud to be the official media sponsor of the premiere of this moving documentary, where Epstein spoke about the families and stigma with fellow filmmaker and executive producer Ricki Lake. The families also attended the premiere, where they celebrated their stories.
