Will Legalized Medical Marijuana Impact How Drug-Sniffing Dogs Do Their Job

Although there’s a lot to work out before it’s implemented, medical marijuana is now legal in the state.

Trooper Troy Roth has been with the Highway Patrol for almost 10 years.

He’s been with his K-9 partner Bodo for less than two years.

Bodo has made about 20 drug busts in that time of meth, cocaine and marijuana.

Medical marijuana is now legal in the state, but Trooper Roth says the K-9 unit will go about its business as usual.

“As far as right now with it just being medical, nothing changes, like I said, our job is to get illegal narcotics off the road…”

“For people that are thinking that it’s legal now in North Dakota, you still can’t bring it across state lines, you still have to have a medical marijuana card, it has to be from the state of North Dakota, you can’t come from another state with a medical marijuana card and bring it in here and think that you’ll be okay,” says Trooper Troy Roth, North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The biggest marijuana bust Bodo has made was around 39 grams of marijuana.

His biggest drug bust overall was a half a pound of cocaine.
