The World’s Largest Weed Dispensary Is About to Open Near the Las Vegas Strip

Planet 13, a massive weed dispensary opening just off the Las Vegas Strip, will be a sight to behold. Music and lights will pulse through its enormous 40,000 square feet of space. A treasure trove of cannabis products for medical and recreational use will line the walls. All surfaces will be shiny and new. You will either love this amusement-park-meets-Apple-store-meets-night-club of cannabis, or you will really fucking hate it. But hey, isn’t that Vegas in a nutshell?

When it opens Thursday, November 1, Planet 13 will be the largest dispensary in Nevada and very likely the world. Its owners are billing it as an experience. Giant LED lotus flowers inspired by Burning Man adorn the building, complemented by a water fountain with LED lights and fog. Inside, five glowing orbs will dance through the air in the main room. Below, there lies a motion-sensing LED walkway. Projectors will shoot three-dimensional visuals onto the ceiling. Guests can fake-graffiti a wall with interactive lasers, then take photos before their drawings are digitally wiped. There will be 47 wide-screen TVs. Planet 13’s marketing director told Vice in August that the plan was to have customers “overwhelmed by the aesthetics.”

Oh, and there’s weed—two brands of it: Planet 13’s eponymous recreational brand, as well as its brand for medical use, called Medizin. The dispensary itself within the complex takes up only 2,300 square feet, and will remain open 24/7. The Las Vegas Sun reports its owners expect at least 2,000 customers a day (mostly tourists). Forty-two cash registers will handle the rush.

All of this sounds hellish on paper, like the Mall of America jam packed with tourists on a psychedelic trip. But imagine experiencing all those glowing orbs, interactive displays, and laser beams under the influence of marijuana. Yeah. Needless to say this is not your regular mom and pop dispensary.

Planet 13 is located near the Las Vegas Strip because marijuana use is still outlawed on the Strip itself. Technically, usage is outlawed anywhere but private residences, which makes things tricky for tourists staying at Caesar’s or wherever; there’s basically nowhere for them to legally smoke, unless your Airbnb owner is cool with it. So don’t ruin a perfectly okay trip by getting fined for public usage. And don’t smuggle marijuana over state borders. But do make everyone look at photos of the laser graffiti art you made while baked out of your mind in Vegas.
