Growing weed might hurt your property value.
Realtors in Canada are warning people that growing cannabis in their private residence could cause the spread of mold and lower its value — even if you’re complying with growing laws.
“On the surface [four plants] sounds moderate, but the legislation doesn’t limit the number of crops or the size of each plant,” explained Canadian Real Estate Association CEO Michael Bourque. “Four plants could yield over five kilograms a year, which has the potential to cause structural damage to dwellings and comes with associated health consequences.”
Bourque also noted that the use of fertilizers and pesticides could make health risks worse in the home or spread through an apartment complex with shared circulation.
The Ontario Real Estate Association estimates costs to remediate a former grow home could be up to $100,000. But some botanists disagree that growing causes issues at all.
“I think this is an exaggeration. Canadians can produce their own beer and wine at home, grow tobacco for personal use, and yet the vast majority buy these products from stores,” stated Anandia Labs Botanist and CEO Jonathan Page.
Ontario Senator Ratna Omidvar adds that 93% of Canadians in a study of 30,000 people were supportive of home growing prior to the government legalizing it.
